What Is A Burner Management System(BMS)?

In oil and gas operations, reliability isn’t optional—it’s essential. At the center of safe and efficient burner performance is a system that quietly does the heavy lifting: the Burner Management System, or BMS.

So what exactly is a BMS?

A BMS is a control system designed to safely manage the ignition, operation, and shutdown of burners. It constantly monitors parameters like flame presence, temperature, and pressure—and shuts the system down when something goes out of range. In short, it protects both your people and your equipment.

What does it actually do?

  • Controls ignition and flame detection

  • Prevents unsafe startups

  • Shuts down burners during unsafe conditions

  • Interfaces with sensors and external safety devices

  • Reduces manual operator intervention

SureFire Systems: Built for Real-World Applications

At SureFire, we’ve built a line of BMS products tailored to the environments our customers actually operate in—from basic skids to high-demand flare systems:

  • SF-50 – A compact, sealed unit designed for smaller flare stacks or tight spaces. Offers a straightforward layout and durable construction.
  • BMS-100 – A streamlined, dependable solution for combustor and flare applications. Easy to install and ideal for basic use cases.
  • BMS-300 – A mid-tier system with added diagnostics, suitable for more complex or high-traffic sites.
  • BMS-350 – Our top-tier model, offering expanded I/O, advanced flame sensing, and greater integration flexibility for multi-burner systems.

Whether you’re managing a remote site or a full-scale facility, our systems are engineered for fast install, reliable ignition, and ongoing compliance with OOOOa and NFPA standards.

These systems are often used in:

  • Flare stacks

  • Combustors

  • Process heaters

  • Dehydrators

  • Incinerators

Whether it’s lighting a flare or keeping a combustor online 24/7, a BMS automates the process and reduces risk.

Why does it matter?

Without a BMS, operators are exposed to higher risks—accidental ignition, regulatory non-compliance, unnecessary downtime, and even catastrophic failure. A modern BMS makes sure ignition happens reliably, safely, and in compliance with safety standards like NFPA and OOOOa.
